The presence of religion is widespread in Latin America’s informal settlements, from statutes of saints in the public space, to religious processions, to individual devotions. Informal settlements are also places of acute multi-dimensional poverty with limited access to opportunities to decent work, quality education and health services, public transport and city connectivity, and places of insecurity and violence. This seminar aims at opening up a discussion about what the role religion plays in the lives of marginalized urban residents, and how religious beliefs and practices can become a springboard or catalyst to reduce multi-dimensional poverty at the urban margins in Latin America.

The seminar is part of a British Academy International Mobility Partnership grant on 'Urban inequality and youth well-being in Latin America's informal settlements'.
