The Rohingyas violently expelled by Myanmar are not recognized as international refugees by Bangladesh. Despite lacking citizenship and the right to work, they have sought to survive through covert employment in labour markets and clientelist relations that provide protection for a price.

‘China’ is a problematical concept for the premodern period because the name unavoidably invokes the fixity of a modern nation-state that maps poorly onto the various and ever changing political formations of earlier centuries.
This talk ascribes the distinctive character of the Horn (taken to encompass Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Somaliland) firstly to its topography, and secondly to its place as the region least affected by colonial logics of state formation.
