Helen Melling is a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies, School of Advanced Study, London and specializes in late colonial and 19th century Peruvian visual culture. She received her BA in French and Spanish from UCL, and completed her MA and PhD in Latin American Studies at King's College London. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled Hidden in Plain Sight: Visualizing Black Subjects in Late Colonial and 19th Century Peru. She is also a contributor to The Image of the Black in Latin America and the Caribbean, a companion volume to The Image of the Black in Western Art, expected in 2019. She will be a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania from August 2019.
