Urdu Casual Teacher Required (Hilary Term 2018)
The Faculty of Oriental Studies is looking for applications for an Urdu Casual Teacher to conduct 16 hours of Urdu literary prose reading classes in Hilary Term 2018 (18 Jan-8 March).
Duties: conducting 16 hours of Urdu literary prose reading classes includes:
Before the classes
a) selecting appropriate literary texts, short stories and theatre or novel excerpts, of about 60 pages in total in consultation with the class tutor, Dr Imre Bangha
b) preparing a glossary for these texts (some texts already have it)
In the classroom
c) introducing the texts and their literary context to students
d) close reading and translation of the texts focussing on grammar and style
e) refreshing relevant Urdu words and phrases and discussing texts and their contexts in Urdu
f) giving out a homework of about 100 words in writing preferably each week and correcting it.
After the classes
g) reporting on each student’s performance at the end of the term.
Right to work in the UK
fluency in Urdu and English
familiarity with modern Urdu prose literature
familiarity with grammatical terminology
recommended: teaching experience of Urdu as a foreign language,
Doctoral students are welcome to apply. Membership of the university is not a requirement.
Classes are on Thursdays 11-1 at the Oriental Institute. The successful candidate will be paid as per university regulations. If they are post Graduate students they will be required to complete the Faculty’s Graduate Teaching Scheme programme in January.
