Language and Culture

The Language, Literature and Culture of Brazil feature prominently among the impressive array of courses on offer at Oxfords Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages. Teaching and research interests of members of the Sub-Faculty of Portuguese cover a wide range of areas of expertise, including Linguistics, Modern Brazilian literature, Women Writers and Brazilian cinema. The new MSt and MPhil courses in Modern Languages feature programmes in Brazilian Literature and Culture, including in preparation for doctoral research. A Brazilian option may also be taken as part of the Programme in Latin American Studies.

Members of the Sub-Faculty with teaching and research interests in Brazil are Professor Tom Earle, Dr Stephen Parkinson, Dr Cláudia Pazos-Alonso and Dr Claire Williams. The Sub-Faculty works closely with the Instituto Camões Centre for Portuguese Language and the Latin American Centre. The University Language Centre runs courses in Portuguese that are open to all members of the University. The Taylor Institution and Modern Languages Faculty Library have outstanding collections of Brazilian Literature and Culture materials, including a fast growing Brazilian DVD and Film Studies collection.
