MPhil Russian and East European Studies

The MPhil in Russian and East European Studies is a two year programme for graduates who are interested in gaining a deeper knowledge and understanding of Russia and Eastern Europe through the study of the region across a range of disciplines. In the first year students will usually  take 3 core courses on contemporary issues which will introduce them to the key issues and debates of the region.

In the second year students are able to specialise their knowledge through the choice of two special subjects courses.

Students will receive training in relevant qualitative and quantitative methodologies to enable them to carry out research and writing for their 30,000 word thesis. There is also a compulsory Russian language element to enable students to develop Russian language skills.

The MPhil may be regarded as a qualification in its own right, or as preparation for a doctoral degree.  Recent MPhil in REES graduates have gone on to take DPhils in Politics and History. Other graduates follow careers in government, NGOs, banking, diplomacy and teaching.
